Several Injured as Rough Air Strikes Delta Flight into Sydney

Delta Airlines said the Airbus A350 went through "momentary rough air" as it touched down at its destination.

Multiple passengers and crew have been injured following a Delta Airlines aircraft from Los Angeles to Sydney experienced significant turbulence on Friday morning.

Flight DL41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, an airline spokesperson told. Several cabin crew members were injured.

Emergency medical services stated they assessed five patients, and transported three to the hospital with minor injuries that included spinal discomfort and head pain. Those affected were between their 30s up to the 70s.

It is the latest incident of aircraft encountering turbulence, with aviation specialists indicating that climate change is a significant contributor.

There were 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the Delta spokesperson added, clarifying that the plane landed "safely and normally" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday.

The NSW Ambulance Service said they received a call just only 180 seconds prior to the plane arrived, and response teams were ready and waiting at the airport.

In 2024, those on board on a Singapore Airlines jet went through a harrowing brief five-second of severe turbulence. An individual died and dozens were injured, as unbelted passengers lifted out of their seats and crashed back down.

Turbulence is not uncommon during flights, and while cases of rough conditions appear to be increasing, they are still very rare.

Estimates show that there are an estimated five thousand cases of severe-or-greater turbulence every year, out of a overall number of in excess of 35 million journeys that currently occur worldwide.

Severe turbulence is defined as when the up and down movements of a plane passing through rough air masses exert greater than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - a strong enough force to throw you from your seat if you weren't wearing a safety belt.

As a changing climate shifts atmospheric conditions, researchers alert that commercial aviation could become less smooth: temperature changes and changing jet streams in the jet stream level are likely to heighten the occurrence and strength of significant turbulence.
