McDonald's has taken down a Christmas commercial produced with generative AI after encountering widespread criticism on social media.

The 45-second ad was developed via generative AI clips and was originally released online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Social Media Criticism and Decision to Pull

Shortly after its release, commenters denounced the implementation of AI in the film. Many described it as "creepy" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This incident serves as an important learning as we examine the appropriate application of generative technology," said a representative from the company.

The advert was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed various situations that often go badly during the Christmas break, using the tagline "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads

Commercials that feature AI-created content have emerged as a growing phenomenon among large corporations, particularly for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has also released consecutive AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Since segments made with generative AI are prone to become unstable the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be about short in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also provoked worries about the replacement of human roles in the advertising sector, with some commenters pointing out it could reduce work for production staff.

Defense from the Creators

After the video's removal, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.

She stated, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then shaped afterward "just as we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't an AI gimmick," she commented. "It was a film."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was predominantly panned, the response for some AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday ad from another major brand reportedly achieved a significant "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.

However, various brands have likewise received scrutiny for employing the technique in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics called "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The incident highlights the continuing debate within the advertising and creative sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
